Flax Seed

Flax Seed   ~   ( Linum perenne lewisii)  Is it Flax seed Oil or is it Linseed oil?  To further confuse things, is Flax a flower or is it a vegetable?  Or is it used as a medicinal herb?

The answer is yes to everything!  Flax is Linseed, Linseed is Flax and it's a flower, a grain and fibre crop, a medicinal herb and has been used to many rope, twine, lace, linen and more!

Both oils come from the same plant and are from the same seed, so they are the same, but not entirely the same, and the differences are significant.   It would be easier if everyone called them the same thing in the same circumstances, but that would be in a perfect world, which I haven't found yet.

Flax oil originated in India and is highly valued for its' fiber and oil, and has been cultivated for thousands of years.   Now other countries such as Russia, North America, India, Morocco, Argentina and Brazil are on board to cultivate Flax to produce the oil.

No matter what you call it, Linseed or Flax seed oil is a rich yellow color and is produced from the seeds of the Flax plant.

While I use the terms Linseed & Flaxseed interchangeably, most vendors and manufacturers do not.   Be careful and know what you're buying, or you could end up with something that you wanted to use as a natural salad dressing and instead it was designed to use on a deck and contains synthetic chemicals.

Is there really a difference between Linseed and Flaxseed oil?

Both oils have the same beginning, they come from the same seeds and from the same plant.  It's what is done to them in terms of processing that changes their name....although not always.

The Flax plant seeds are used in Organic raw, cold pressed oils.  These are the healthy natural oils that are used for cooking, eating & body care.  They contain no preservatives or additives and they should be organically grown.

Even though this oil is intended for food consumption, I use it personally for just about everything you can imagine, including many construction purposes which include making natural paints & varnishes, protecting decks and counter tops, as penetrating oils for woods and to seal earthen floors.

And of course, it's great for animals too, dogs, horses, cats and they love it and their coats will shine!

Eat it, Wear It Or Stain Your Deck

What's nice about using this healthy cooking oil for construction projects is that it's completely non toxic, you can rub the excess on your skin, hair or dog as he passes by!

You can also add pure essential oils to your blend of paint or stain and enjoy the aromas as they penetrate into your floor or deck.  Flax/Linseed is a deeply penetrating oil that becomes part of the wood structure.

Now, isn't that a tad bit better than a highly inflammable solvent?

Flax seed oil is exceptionally rich in essential fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acids and Omega 3, Omega 6 & Omega 9, which are considered essential for development of a healthy heart, liver, brain and immune systems.  Flax oil is used as an emollient, anti-inflammatory and healing agent, with lecithin and B Vitamins.

Flax seed oil has been shown to help create smooth, soft skin, give life and luster to dried, damaged hair and keep your cholesterol balanced.

This healthy oil is known as Flax Seed oil, but to confuse things, some bulk vendors also refer to it as Linseed oil....both must be organic and edible without any additives.  Then it doesn't matter what you call it.

What is the Linseed oil that is sold in Big Box Stores?

The Linseed oil sold in paint departments and hardware stores is made from the same oil from the flax seeds of the same plant.  The extraction and processing methods are completely different.

It is NOT intended as an edible product and can seriously harm you if ingested.  If you find it in the paint or other construction department, you can NOT eat it.

This type of Linseed oil is often called Dried or Boiled Linseed Oil.   More advertising talk, the product isn't really dried and isn't really boiled but it sounds less obnoxious than what it really is.

It's not really boiled over flame, it's chemically boiled with solvents.  YUK!

These solvents enable a slightly faster drying time for applications on decks, flooring and such.

Never eat, drink or leave this product where children or animals could accidentally eat it.

That is always called Linseed oil, and never called Flaxseed or Flax oil and it is highly flammable!  Never leave rags or other material near it or you could burn your house down.

Commercial Linseed oil, in small bottles, at hardware stores not only contains solvents, it also costs far more than delicious, healthy, organic Linseed or Flaxseed oil!   Plus you never have to worry about whether it's edible or not...
